Catch Up

Justin helped Lance make his way back to their quarters. The pilot held a small box given to him by the doctors to aid in recovery. When the elevator came, the first lieutenant kicked everyone out before stepping a foot inside. He positioned himself to be in the corner of the box next to the door so he’d see who came in first.

The elevator never stopped to pick anyone else up. The doors slid open as they got to the barracks. Lance exited. The blood trail left by Hal and his team still stained the ground. The sight of it being polished out of the floor caused the first lieutenant’s heart to race as the sound of rounds bouncing off his armor rang in his ears.

Reaching their room, Justin opened it, handed Lance his medication, and entered the room first. The pilot turned and gave his friend a thumbs-up. A sense of calm washed over the squad commander at the security given to him from his now roommate.

Lance stepped in and looked around. His multi-tool sat on the bottom bunk. Just like Justin indicated, the room was clear. Opening his medical pack, he found there were several syringes that stated he was supposed to inject the surgical sites once a day for three days to accelerate healing.

“So you’re taking the top bunk now?” Lance asked as he looked over at Justin.

“You said it, thirty-two feet per second per second. I could use the practice on difficult descents, given not every planet has similar gravitational pulls to our solar system,” Justin replied with a shrug.

“Justin…” Lance started to argue.

“I don’t want to hear anything about it,” the pilot countered. “You’re taking the bottom bunk, and as your emergency contact, you can consider that a doctor’s order.”

With a sigh, Lance shook his head and sat on his bed. The ache in his side persisted as he moved. He grabbed his multi-tool and slid it onto his forearm before lying back in the bed. Grabbing several needles from his medicine pack, he injected the contents of each syringe into his repaired wounds.

Discarding the medicine applicators into the box, he turned his attention to his multi-tool, which blinked with a new message. He pressed the notification. His bracer’s holographic interface activated, displaying several dozen files of deciphered Galio intel.

“Well, this’ll be useful,” Lance muttered to himself.

“Well, that’s good,” Justin called down as he climbed to the top bunk. “Now, actually, follow your regimen so the stem cells will bond properly and you don’t pop a spleen next time you’re in a fire fight.”

“I’m more than capable of following instructions,” Lance countered before pressing on a few of the files to find the most important ones first.

“Of that, I have no doubt,” Justin said with a hint of sarcasm as the familiar beeping of him starting up his flight simulator game rang out, causing the pilot to fall silent.

Lance spent the next several hours reading. He received a message from Michael that they were about to start Hal’s interrogation.
